He states that silah rahmi is not only about preserving relationships with outward relatives, but it also means bringing together the scattered inner elements of the human being inclinations, faculties, intellect, heart, hearing, sight, and the dispersed states of the inner self around one center. Just as in the outer world a person has parents, siblings, and other relatives, in the same way there are also different faculties and organs within the human being which, although they originate from the same source, become scattered from one another. At times the eye desires one thing, the heart feels something else, the mind runs in another direction, the Nafs becomes entangled in a different attraction, and the tongue says something altogether different. This inner fragmentation is, in reality, a form of inward severing of ties. Shaykh-ul-Islam beautifully clarifies that the perfection of the blessed Prophetic character of the Holy Prophet ﷺ is not only that he joined people’s outward relationships, but also that his spiritual attention brings together the scattered inner elements of a person and grants them unity. When all the inclinations of a person’s inner self gather around one center namely the love of Allah Almighty, attachment to Him, and seeking His pleasure then this inner fragmentation comes to an end, and inward silah rahmi is established.
